Often it’s not obvious what your portion of the cost-sharing is at work. In the past, it was common (because it was cheap) for an employer to pay the entire family premium. These days, an employer is generally able to pay all or most of the ELIGIBLE EMPLOYEE’S PREMIUM ONLY. If the spouse and/or kids want to be on the plan, they would pay 100% of the group rate which typically cost far more than a comparable individual/family plan. To know for sure is to directly pose the question to the person who is in charge of enrollments in your company.
Absolutely! The disparity of rates between group policies and individual policies tend to be greatest amongst kids, but the spouse can see significant savings as well and is definitely worth quoting.
There are a few larger employer plans who have this language as a means of discouraging healthy employees from leaving the group plans. For all practical purposes, that practice is against the law effective 1/1/14 as defined by the Affordable Care Act.
With guaranteed issue, no pre-existing conditions, and individual and family policies available with BETTER benefits that cost LESS, why would you want to go back?
If employer coverage is made available to a family then generally no subsidy is allowed. That said, the base premiums alone (without subsidy) tend to be less than the group plan anyway! The average group insurance rate on a child is $225 / month. A better plan issued without subsidy on an individual insurance plan averages only $141 / month!
Absolutely not. Coverage is Guaranteed Issue with NO pre-existing conditions exclusions. Enrollment takes less than 10 minutes and no glitches!
